We were glad to have our truck camper wreck and recovery featured on Truck Camper Adventures online magazine. Our hope is to get the word out to fellow boondockers to be better prepared in case of an accident while traveling off-road. Please be sure to check out our lessons learned regarding insurance and finding help for off-road recovery in Truck Camper Adventure’s interview with us.
Resources at the ready
A good resource for reporting your exact location for help is GoFindMeSAR. This app is preferred by Facebook Recovery Groups that we have talked to due to its accuracy and ease of use. Put this in your cell phone to have handy in the event of an emergency.
Volunteer recovery groups can provide off-road help and recovery. Finding such a group was our saving grace as professional towing companies were reticent to work in our remote location and charged way more than our insurance company was willing to pay. Read all about one such amazing group and get a list of Facebook Recovery Groups in the western states in our informative post.
Read and see a video about the difficult recovery process it took to get our truck camper out of the wilderness, you can check it out on our blog at this link.
John says
I was wondering from the point in the article that he could not see well why he did not have a spotter. I also wondered if you had a limited slip differential as I have on all my trucks since my first one.
Boondocker says
Thank you John for your thoughts. Pres was using his mirrors and could have asked me to spot for him as we were traveling alone. The limited-slip differential was insufficient with 4WD low when the rear wheel that hit the shale lost traction causing us to slide. Pres will be installing a locking-differential and feels this would have made a big difference.
It is inevitable after driving off-road for nearly 50 years to have an accident. It was a simple mistake that had big consequences. We are so grateful we walked away unhurt as it could have been much worse. We stated these things in our interview with Truck Camper Adventure Magazine in hopes our mishap will caution others to learn from our accident.
